She was the daughter of Sthenelus and Nicippe, and sister of Eurystheus and Medusa. The Arcadian centaur Homadas tried to rape her but Heracles killed him. Her name is derived from the Greek 'kingfisher,' (it is also the name of one of the stars of the Pleiades, commonly known, as the Seven Sisters, as a flock of doves, or the Hen and her Chicks. Although this Alcyone may have no particular relationship to the constellation.
